Is CBT Effective?

CBT was originally developed as a treatment for depression. Over the past three decades, scientific research has firmly established CBT as the psychological treatment of choice for this disorder, with success rates comparable to those obtained with pharmacological treatment (i.e., antidepressant medication). In addition to its success in the treatment of depression, CBT has been shown to be effective in the treatment or management of a range of other problems including:

  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • generalized anxiety/excessive worry
  • persistent health anxiety
  • social anxiety/shyness
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • O-C spectrum disorders (body dysmorphic disorder, compulsive hair-pulling, etc.)
  • posttraumatic stress disorder
  • bipolar disorders/mood swings
  • eating disorders
  • sleep disorders
  • personality disorders
  • alcohol/substance abuse
  • anger control problems
  • chronic pain/illness
  • relationship/couples/family problems
